Skull Base Clinic

Skull Base Clinic

Skull base surgery is a unique speciality encompassing multidisciplinary treatment for diseases below the brain and within the organs of Ear / Nose and Throat. The skull base is a crowded and complicated area with different openings that the spinal cord, many blood vessels, and nerves all pass through.

Skull base surgery may be done to remove both benign and malignant lesions on the underside of the brain. Skull base tumors usually are removed by traditional surgery while preserving healthy tissue surrounding it. Since it’s a difficult area to reach, skull base surgery today is done by a minimally invasive endoscopic approach via nose and ear. The Skull base clinic at MERF is a collaborative effort by a professional team over 2 decades which includes ENT Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, Oncologists, Pathologists & related clinical specialists like Audiologists & Speech language and Swallowing Rehabilitations. Complex cases are reviewed here by a large, multidisciplinary skull base tumor board and appropriate state of art treatment is given.

We routinely operate on cases like CSF leaks, Pituitary tumors, Acoustic Neuromas, Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma and other space occupying lesions of skull base such as Chordomas, Meningiomas, Craniopharyngiomas etc.

The MERF skull base clinic is well established and gets referrals from not only Tamilnadu, but from rest of India and also neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

This Clinic is headed by Prof. Raghu Nandhan S, Consultant ENT and Skull base surgeon, MERF. He runs this Special Clinic on all Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 2 PM.
