Madras ENT Research Foundation, being a world-class tertiary referral centre has felt the need to make its services available to the economically deprived sections of the society.

Madras ENT Research Foundation Charitable Trust was formed with the idea of rendering yeoman service to the people below the poverty line. Many major surgeries and life-saving surgeries have been done under the patronage of this trust. This has been possible due to the contributions from our well-wishers, philanthropists and patients. Contributions to this Charitable Trust are exempt from income tax under section 80 G.

Prof. Mohan Kameswaran

President

Professor Mohan Kameswaran, President of the Charitable Trust is a leading ENT Surgeon in India.

He is the Managing Director & Senior Consultant of Madras ENT Research Foundation Private Limited, Honorary Distinguished Professor, The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University & Honorary Professor, Department of ENT, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Chennai.

He is the recipient of the ‘PADMA SHRI’ National Award from the Former President, His Excellency Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, Government of India in recognition of his distinguished and exceptional service in the field of Medicine in 2006.

He was honoured with the prestigious ‘DR. B.C.ROY National AWARD FOR THE YEAR 2008’ by the Medical Council of India, for the development of specialties in different branches in medicine and received the award from the Former President of India, His Excellency Shri. Pranab Mukherjee in 2016.

He has received many prestigious International and National awards. He is the recipient of ‘Indo-Australian Award’ for Meritorious Service by the Indo-Australian Association, Award for Excellence of Service’ in appreciation of contribution to Pioneering Cochlear Implant Program in Srilanka, by the President of Srilanka, ‘Award for Service’ from Vidya Jyothi Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Srilanka, ‘Outstanding Leadership Award’ in recognition of his ‘Pioneering spirit in the field of Cochlear Implants’ at the 1st World Congress on Cochlear Implants in Emerging countries’ Dubai, Nikhil J. Bhatt ‘International Humanitarian Award’ at the 122nd American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, Atlanta, USA.

He was one of the 10 best ENT surgeons in the world to receive ‘Gold Medal of Honour’ at the highest ENT Body - International Federation of Otorhinological Societies (IFOS) at Dubai.

He was invited by World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2018 to address the World Health Assembly on World Hearing Day.

The American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck surgery named him ‘Good Will Ambassador for India’ in its annual convention in Vancouver in 2013.

The American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck surgery also honoured him as ‘One of the Four Honorees around the Globe’ for his contribution to the Specialty’ in Nashville, USA in October 2023.

He was Conferred ‘Award of Excellence’ in appreciation of outstanding contribution towards the` Cochlear Implant Group of India by His Excellency, the Governor of Kerala and was awarded the ‘Shri Shyam Lal Saxena Memorial Award 2005-2006’ by the National Academy of Medical Sciences for the best-published work in the field of bio-medical engineering by bio-medical scientists. He is the recipient of the ‘Tamilnadu Scientist Award-2007’ by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu, ‘Best Doctor Award in 2011’ from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R.Medical University, ‘Best Doctor Award - 2015’ for his best performance from the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, ‘Best Doctor Award - 2017’ by Government of Tamil Nadu and was honoured as the ‘Doyen of Ear Surgery’ at Government Stanley Medical College & Hospital. He has also received the ‘Scroll of Honour’ from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R.Medical University. He was honored with ‘Dedicated Services’ award at the Upgraded Institute of Otorhinolaryngology, Madras Medical College, Chennai.

He was conferred ‘Doctor of Science (Honoris–Causa)’ by The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Saveetha University and SRM Institute of Science & Technology.

He was honoured with ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the 10th SAARC ENT Conference conducted at Dhaka, Bangladesh, and has subsequently received Life time achievement awards from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R.Medical University, from the Association of Otorhinolaryngologists of India and also from the 14th Edition of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, FICCI TANCARE and from the Upgraded Institute of Otorhinolaryngology Madras Medical College.

He is the Regional Secretary for South and Western Asia, International Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies (IFOS), & was former Board Member of the Politzer Society Inc. He was also the President of Asia Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implants and its related science (APSCI).

He is one of the pioneers of Cochlear Implant Surgery in India and was responsible for starting Cochlear Implant surgery in 56 centers in India, and in 7 centers overseas including Sri Lanka, Armed Forces Hospital in Bangladesh, Nigeria & Nepal.

He is the FIRST Surgeon in South and South East Asia to have performed the Auditory Brainstem Implant and the FIRST Pediatric Brainstem Implant in Asia, January 2009.

He has mentored several ENT surgeons in the state and was responsible to start Auditory Brainstem Implant surgery in Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore and in Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, Army R & R Hospital, Delhi and Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur.

He is also the FIRST surgeon in Asia Pacific region to have performed the Totally Implantable Hearing Device surgery.

He is a very simple and self-effacing human being with a deep empathy for the under privileged and has a strong social commitment. He has conducted over 370 Free ENT and hearing Screening camps across the length and breadth of the Tamil Nadu state and has performed a wide range of ENT and Head and Neck surgeries free of charges for poor and underprivileged patients in rural and remote areas. His efforts have significantly improved the quality of life of many individuals with ENT and Head and Neck disorders, reflecting both his surgical expertise and his dedication to serve the community with compassion and professionalism. In short, he is an embodiment of a dynamic surgeon, brilliant academician, great leader, good teacher and an emulation and inspiration for everyone to follow.

Mrs. Indira M. Kameswaran

Secretary

Mrs. Indira M. Kameswaran, M.A is the Executive Director and inspiration behind Madras ENT Research Foundation Private Limited - (MERF). The entire conception and execution of the institution was her brainchild. She is the face MERF presents to the corporate world. She heads the finance department of MERF and supervises the day-to-day functioning of the hospital and also supports the conduct of various social and academic activities. She also co-ordinates the Cochlear Implant program at MERF.

She was the Founder Correspondent of MERF Institute of Speech & Hearing. She started the Institute in 2006 because of her deep and abiding commitment to the cause of deafness as she has been for years struggling for this cause along with her husband Prof. Mohan Kameswaran. She has been a direct witness to the dearth of qualified personnel in the field of Audiology and Speech-language pathology in the country. Having travelled and lived overseas for many years, she was also aware of the international needs in the profession. She has interacted with several Audiological Institutions overseas, and was very keen to foster interactive educational programs with Institutes of repute across the world.

She started the first University approved Degree Course in 'Post Graduate Diploma in Auditory Habilitation' in collaboration with leading centers in the United States of America and Australia.

She was the mother figure for the Institute from its inception, and was directly and personally involved in every facet of the Institute’s development until she handed it over to MERF Institute of Speech & Hearing (P) Ltd in 2018.

She is the Secretary of Madras ENT Research Foundation Charitable Trust, which sponsors free treatment for needy and indigent patients. Through her activity at the Hospital and in collaboration with the Institute, she organizes free treatment and therapies for patients from Down's Syndrome Association of Tamil Nadu & Spastic Society of India, to name a few. She also looks into the conduct of free camps & community-related social service activities.

In short Mrs. Indira M. Kameswaran is an embodiment of an able administrator, an educationist, philanthropist and a social activist – all combined in one.

Dr. Niranjan Kameswaran

Trustee

Niranjan Kameswaran serves as Chief Executive Officer of Ethyreal Bio. He brings more than 15 years of biotech experience across company formation, business development, financing, new product strategy, and operations.

Niranjan joined Ethyreal through his role as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Atlas Venture.

Previously, he was Chief Operating Officer and Chief Business Officer at Resonance Medicine where he led strategy and operations and helped advance the company’s novel therapeutics platform.

Before Resonance, he led corporate strategy, business development, and investor relations at Kala Pharmaceuticals, and helped lead its IPO and multiple public follow-on financings.

He began his industry career at Civitas Therapeutics where he played a lead role in managing a dual-path IPO/M&A process which culminated in the company’s acquisition.

Niranjan holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.E. from Anna University in India.

Dr. Vasumathi Kameswaran

Trustee

Vasumathi Kameswaran is a Scientist who is interested in understanding the molecular basis of human disease.

Vasumathi completed her B.Tech in Industrial Biotechnology from St. Joseph's College of Engineering in Chennai, and then obtained her Master's at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. During this time, she worked on gene regulation in autoimmune conditions like Type 1 diabetes.

Vasumathi then obtained her Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where her thesis work focused on the genetic and epigenetic regulation of Type 2 diabetes.

Following this, Vasumathi completed her Postdoctoral training at the Gladstone Institutes,UCSF in San Francisco where she focused on the genetics of congenital heart disease.

She is now a Scientist at Genentech, a biotechnology company located in the San Francisco Bay Area. She works on Epigenetics and Chromatin Biology within the Next Generation Sequencing department.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY ENT

“Hearing loss” is a major public health concern in India, affecting millions of individuals across all age groups with a significant social and economic impact. It is the most common sensory impairment in the new born and is a “Double tragedy” because a child who cannot hear cannot develop speech and language and becomes a deaf mute. It is often referred to as a “Silent handicap”, left undiagnosed in many individuals, deaf individuals do not get sympathized like the blind and hearing loss in older adults is associated with social isolation, depression and cognitive decline.

Community based hearing screening programs therefore play a vital role in identifying hearing loss at its earliest stages, facilitating prompt treatment and improving long term outcomes. Prof. Mohan Kameswaran established our community ENT department in the year 2007 with a strong determination to reach out to the needy. The department was started to address the need for a specialty hospital and a research unit like ours to reach out to the rural masses to:

Diagnose and establish the prevalence of hearing loss.
Educate the public about the options and various solutions available.
Carry out minor interventions at the village level wherever possible
Transport and bring children and adults who are in need of detailed investigations and treatment to the main facility in Chennai

The department is deeply committed to promoting Ear, Nose, Throat and Head and Neck health beyond the walls of the institution. Since the time of its inception the department has been carrying out various social activities time and again by way of free ENT and hearing screening camps and surgeries for the needy patients. Our camps are organized in rural communities, schools, orphanages, senior citizen homes, workplaces, underserved regions ensuring that quality healthcare reaches those people who may have limited access to specialized ENT health care services. The screening camps are conducted by experienced ENT specialists, audiologists and trained healthcare professionals using modern diagnostic equipments.

Dr. S. Sudhamaheswari, consultant ENT surgeon is in charge of this department since 2007. As the Head of the community ENT department she has played a pivotal role in extending ENT healthcare to the underprivileged people of the society. She has contributed significantly to the early identification and management of ENT disorders among diverse populations through hundreds of community outreach camps, screening programs and awareness initiatives. Her dedication to community service continues to strengthen the institution’s mission of accessible and equitable healthcare.

The activities of the department include

Free newborn hearing screening at Saidapet Maternity hospital every week on Monday and Thursday.
Free newborn hearing screening and Speech clinic at Institute of child health, Egmore every week on Tuesday and Friday
Free hearing and speech and language services and ENT evaluation for children with Down's syndrome.
Free ENT examination and audiological testing with hearing aid trial for the hearing impaired referred from Palanpur Jain association which is a social welfare organization
Periodical free hearing screening camps all over Tamil Nadu for children under 12 years of age in association with the Rotary club of Chennai.
Free ENT camps in and around Chennai and also in other distant places in Tamil Nadu in association with Rotary and Lions clubs and other voluntary social welfare organizations
Advanced ENT and audiological evaluation if needed for the patients examined in the camps is done at a very low cost depending upon their socioeconomic status.
ENT and Head and neck surgeries are also performed at a very low cost for poor patients diagnosed to have ENT and head and neck diseases during camps
The necessary investigations and preoperative work up is done at very nominal charges for camp patients
