Genetic clinic

Genetics is a new frontier in Otology and has a significant emerging role in the diagnosis and management of hearing loss in children and adults. In keeping up with its philosophy of delivering the advanced care for its patients, the Genetics department of MERF is one of the earliest established departments in the country with dedicated genetic services for the diagnosis and management of congenital hearing loss. Prof. Mohan Kameswaran established this department in the year 2012. Dr. S. Sudhamaheswari currently heads this department and she is the first otolaryngologist in the country with a PhD qualification in hearing loss genetics.

The services offered include Precision new era genetic testing along with appropriate pre and post-test genetic counseling. Genetic testing in hearing loss helps in determining the cause, prognosticate the outcomes after intervention and to predict the recurrence risk in the family. It also serves as the platform for futuristic gene therapies.
